A VERY SMALL BATH

History of the project

Our client wanted to redo a small bathroom located on the second floor of his home. The existing bath was very small with six foot eight inch ceilings. There was very little light and the room was painted brown. The plumbing fixtures really could not be moved, since there was only about 45 square feet of floor space with two doors to access the bath from adjoining bedrooms.

After having reviewing our clients needs, we found that he was using this bath as the master bath of the house. He wanted the feel of space and realized that with the constraints of the existing layout there was really no way, short of entering into a major second story addition and remodel, to gain any extra space, but what to do. He was Stumped!

After gutting the bath, the ceiling was vaulted and three foot by six foot glass block panel was installed in the exterior shower wall. The shower was also enlarged about six square feet by taking advantage of some wasted space that was found behind a shower wall during demolition. A half wall dividing the shower from the vanity area was fabricated instead of the existing full height wall. Two shower heads where installed with a four port diverter to give the client flexibility in shower options. The bath was rewired taking into consideration the clients need for lots of light. Blue board was chosen with a coat of plaster for the wall finish and painted a crisp white semi gloss. A custom cabinet was designed and installed with an "Avonite" emerald green counter surface. Custom hand made white tile was installed, from Fire Clay Tile of San Jose, CA. A "HEWI" fold down shower seat was installed to accommodate the clients need to shower lounge. Mirrors and medicine cabinets where very important additions to the project, four in all. Gold plumbing fixtures and bath accessories where the final touches to complete the project.
